TOMSK, Jul 14 – RIA Tomsk. Candidates and doctors of science defending dissertations in Tomsk State University (TSU) and also graduates of postgraduate study of the university had an opportunity to apply for degree of PhD which was founded at the university, the press service of TSU reports on Thursday.
According to TSU, PhD degree (Lat. Philosophiæ Doctor) – the doctor of philosophy – is awarded in the USA, a number of the European countries and several universities of Russia (along with "candidate of science" and "doctor of science"). PhD-degree admits scientific community worldwide.
"In Tomsk State University is accepted the situation according to which in the university TSU PhD degree will be awarded. The people who have already defended candidate or doctor's dissertations in TSU or had here postgraduate training can apply for it receiving", – is said in the message.
According to the university, existence of such procedure will allow to improve positioning of the university in the international space and will promote process of internationalization of TSU scientists. The draft of the provision on PhD-degree has been developed on the basis of practical experience of the leading foreign and Russian higher education institutions and passed public discussions in TSU."Degree is awarded by Tomsk State University, therefore such requirement is imposed to the thesis – it has to be executed at the high level that it could be qualified as the scientific work corresponding to the level of schools of sciences of TSU" – quoted in the message the vice rector for study of TSU Victor Demin.
It is noted that with introduction of Phd degree the possibility of protection of the master's thesis at university remains. Also now in TSU look for a way to organize process of coordination of two procedures – carrying out State Final Examination in postgraduate study and protection of the PhD-thesis.
