The graduate student of the Tomsk Polytechnic University (TPU) develops soluble magnesium implants, which, unlike existing, will allow to replace the injured bones without additional surgery and to help an organism to grow up own bone tissue, it is reported on Wednesday on the website of the higher education institution.
It is specified that traditional method of treatment of fractures is a replacement of the injured bones with metal implants of stainless steel, titan and its alloys. However, repeated operation on their removal is necessary after healing of the fracture. The graduate student of TPU Timur Mukhametkaliyev suggests to use bioresorbable magnesium alloys as soluble implants.
"Magnesium is chosen as a basis not a coincidence: it is nontoxical, is the integral element of metabolism and possesses close to a human bone mechanical properties. <…> The implants made of magnesium alloys are capable to be dissolved slowly in a body of a person and to be replaced with a new bone formation", – it is said in the message.
It is noted that the fast solubility of magnesium in an organism is its shortcoming at the same time. But the developer solved this problem by drawing of bioactive coatings from hydroxyapatite on implants.It is added that research teams study possibilities of use of magnesium in implantology worldwide today. But only the TPU scientists and their colleagues from Korea, Germany and Canada managed to create effective technology and. The received results of the researches of the polytechnic students are already published in the leading Russian and foreign magazines.
