TOMSK, Jan 18 – RIA Tomsk. Researchers of Tomsk State University (TSU) received a state order for introduction of the technology, which will help doctors to diagnose neurologic diseases more precisely; the state will invest 30 million rubles in the project, the press service of the university reported on Wednesday.
It is noted that assessment of condition of covers of nervous fibers – myelin, which is one of the main indicators of health of brain, is the cornerstone of the project. The international group of scientists was engaged in development of the project. Their method allows to estimate non-invasively quantity of myelin in white and gray substances of brain by means of the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
"The research project, similar to which wasn't in Russia yet, is estimated for three years. The state will invest 30 million rubles in clinical approbation of the diagnostic method of the increased accuracy. The scientists plan to introduce this development in clinical practice by the end of 2019", – it is said in the report.
It is specified that the technology is based on receiving of so-called cards of myelin – "the images of brain reflecting quantity of covers of nervous fibers it is similar to how, for example, the land relief can be schematically represented on maps" by means of special procedures of mathematical data processing of MRI.Project managers, professor of University of Washington (USA) and research supervisor of the TSU Laboratory of Neurobiology of Scientific Research Institute of Biology and Biophysics Vasily Yarnykh notice that maps reveal microscopic changes of substance of brain, which can't be found by means of MRI. Scientists plan clinical approbation of the method at such neurologic diseases as a stroke, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson's disease.
It is added that neurobiologists will work with several institutions: Siberian State Medical University (SSMU), Children's Hospital №1 of Tomsk, Russian National Research Medical University named after N.I. Pirogov (RNRMU, Moscow), International Tomography Center (ITC) (Novosibirsk) for performing of the state order.
