TOMSK, May 15 – RIA Tomsk. Scientists of Tomsk Polytechnic University (TPU) together with foreign colleagues developed lightweight and durable materials based on oil refining industry waste, which won’t become brittle even in the Arctic frosts, the head of the Department of Technology of Organic Substances and Polymer Materials TPU Mekhman Yusubov reported RIA Tomsk.

Earlier it was reported that the international center "Chemistry of the Future" was established in TPU, one of the directions of its work will be the creation of new materials, in particular, together with the Belgian Ghent University, with which Tomsk citizens have been cooperating for several years.

"We developed the material for Russia, for extreme conditions, and it's frosts. The usual polymers changes their structure at low temperatures, they seem to "freeze", and it makes them much more fragile. We proposed materials that would be very light, and at the same time their structure will not change because of the cold, which means that they will remain durable", – Yusubov said.

He specified that polytechnics together with colleagues from the University of Ghent developed polymers based on dicyclopentadiene derivatives, which, in turn, derived from waste from the petrochemical industry, in particular, in the production of monomers in the production of polyethylene and polypropylene.

"These materials have high durability at low density. Moreover, they can be modernized in various ways, increasing stability and durability, and also on the basis of them it is possible to obtain various composite materials", – the interlocutor of the agency explained.

He added that materials can be used for parts of frameworks of autotractor machinery, underwater vehicles, elements of weather stations and much more. At present, laboratory samples of polymers are obtained, however, to scale the technology and bring products to the market, scientists need an industrial partner. In new materials was interested, in particular, SIBUR.
