TPU scientists to study THz-radiation using the RFBR and JSPS grants

TOMSK, Feb 19 – RIA Tomsk. Scientists of Tomsk Polytechnic University (TPU) with colleagues from Japanese national laboratory KEK develop new methods to generate monochromatic radiation in terahertz (THz) range using the grant of Russian Foundation for Basic Research (RFBR) and Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS), the press service of TPU reports on Monday.

It is explained that the radiation in the THz range is similar to the laser radiation, but unlike it, it penetrates through the skin, wood, plastic, ceramics, paper and other materials and does not have such harmful side effects as X-ray radiation. THz sources are used in security systems to scan baggage and people, as well as when looking for tumors and other pathological processes in the body.

"The aim of the research, which will be carried out at the TPU microtron and LUCX accelerator (KEK), will be the development of new methods for generating of monochromatic radiation in the THz range. <…> (For this purpose) Tomsk polytechnicians received a grant from the Russian Foundation for Basic Research and the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science", – is said in the report.

During the grant period (2 years), scientists should identify methods for obtaining intense terahertz radiation with the help of electron beams, and also develop a technique for obtaining of monochromatic radiation with a certain line width. Monochromatic radiation will allow specialists using THz sources to increase the sensitivity and accuracy of measurements.

"We will carry out experimental studies of the possibilities of generation of THz radiation on compact electronic accelerators (TPU microtron and accelerator LUCX (KEK). <…> With the help of already available experimental data and theoretical developments we substantiated that it is possible to obtain monochromatic THz radiation", – the press service quotes the project manager Alexander Potylitsyn.

It is specified that the results of the study will be used, in particular, by Japanese participants in experiments to be introduced into medical practice in Japan. About the possible implementation of developments in Russia is not reported.
