TOMSK, Nov 2 – RIA Tomsk. Research cases, high-profile contests, grants for development – modern students are given plenty of opportunities to start a scientific career. A conductor in this matter for Tomsk polytechnicians is a specialized center. Details – in the material of RIA Tomsk.

Under supervision

The Scientific Career Center (SCC) of Tomsk Polytechnic University (TPU) is headed by the young scientist Evgenia Frantsina. At one time, she passed a way from a student to a candidate of technical sciences and a researcher in the Division for Chemical Engineering of the School of Earth Sciences & Engineering TPU.

"It is very important to support students at the stage of their arrival in science, because the success of the future scientific path largely depends on the start", – says Francina.

The work of the SCC is coordinated by the Division of Vice Rector for Research and Innovations. The main task of the center - is to help students, graduate students, young doctoral students, teachers and research assistants (as young people in the scientific field considered people under 40) in research activities at the Russian and international level.

These can be grants with financial support for research, contests, scholarships, including studying abroad, international internships at universities and research centers around the world. "Fifty polytechnics were able to attract to the international cooperation, trips abroad and to Russian cities in 2017 and 2018", – the head of the SCC said.

Science with "bags packed"

"The functions of the SCC include, among other things, the development of a system of encouraging students and young scientists to carry out research work in Russia and abroad, as well as the organization of events aimed at developing intercollegiate and interuniversity (including international) relations, interaction with academic, scientific and research and production organizations for collaborative researches", – comments Frantsina.

As an example, she cited the success of students of the School of Earth Sciences & Engineering of TPU Anzhelika Posvyashchennaya and Eldar Urazov, who asked SCC for professional help. In 2017, they became winners of the international Russian-German competition for students YOUNG VISION AWARD 2017.

"In their project "New method of tracer research of oil reservoirs without using equipment at the oil field: mobile technologies "Angelica and Eldar studied how to control the tracer on oil reservoirs without using equipment. The internship in Germany and the publication of the project in a specialized journal expected the winners", – remembers Frantsina.

To support the academic mobility of graduate students and employees of TPU, as well as to increase the number of polytechnicians with a PhD (Doctor of Philosophy, academic degree of the doctor of philosophy or other specialties, which is awarded abroad and is the last stage of education), Polytechnic University introduced "PhDPLUS" scholarship in 2015.

"In 2018, at this mobility program, at once four young scientists were trained abroad", – the head of the SCC commented.

"The walls at home are your friends, your comfort and your helping hands"

Support within the university – is another area of work of the SCC. Its employees organize internal competitions, conferences and youth scientific schools. For example, a university competition for the "Best Student" and "Best Graduate Student" of TPU title is held annually.

As an example, Frantsina gives Alexander Petrusev, a student of the School of Energy & Power Engineering. He received the title of the "Best TPU Student" while studying at the fourth year. After that, Alexander won many contests and conferences of the Russian and international level.

"He has a diploma of the winner of the competition in the thematic field "Power" of the All-Russian competition "Scientific and Technical Creativity of Youth 2017", the diploma of the Grand Prix of the All-Russian competition "My country is – my Russia ". He is the winner of the competition for a personal scholarship of the Vladimir Potanin scholarship program", – says Frantsina about student success.

Now Petrusev is studying in the city of Grenoble (France) and is the only TPU student who received a scholarship of the President of the Russian Federation for students abroad in 2018.

How to start a scientific career

"The development of scientific career should be started with the definition of the subject you are interested in and the direction of research", - advise the employees of the Scientific Career Center of Tomsk Polytechnic University. – As a rule, students choose a topic corresponding their specialization. A research supervisor plays an important role in helping to take the first steps in a career".

Further, the immersion into the scientific world follows the classical scheme: the research supervisor helps the student to decide on the subject, write relevant papers, collect the first scientific achievements and create a portfolio. Participation in internal, inter-university or Russian conferences – is all the first steps towards building the foundation for a scientific career.

"With the portfolio of achievements it is already possible to compete for, for example, scholarships and grants of the President of the Russian Federation for students and young scientists, the title of laureate of the Prize of the Legislative Council of the Tomsk Region for young scientists and young talents", – explain the specialists of TPU SCC.

They note that the Scientific Career Center helps to get information about all existing scientific competitions for students and young scientists, to understand the conditions of participation, to collect the necessary documents, to write applications for them correctly.

Polytechnicians annually win prizes in scholarships and grants competitions. Over the past five years, they have received three awards of the Russian government in the field of science and technology for young scientists, 21 medals of the Russian Academy of Sciences, 29 grants of the President of the Russian Federation, 94 grants under the International Academic Mobility Program (Mikhail Prokhorov Foundation, DAAD), 38 scholarships of the President of the Russian Federation for studying abroad for undergraduate and graduate students.

In 2018, students starting their scientific careers can take part in the following competitions: "Tomsk city" scholarship, Vladimir Potanin Foundation undergraduate scholarship, "Engineer of the Year" award, Tomsk Region Legislative Duma Prize, School of Leaders of Student Scientific Communities "One Step Ahead".

There are also annual DAAD research scholarships for graduate students and young scientists, scientific internships for academics and university teachers for one to three months (DAAD, Germany), short-term DAAD research scholarships for graduate students and young scientists, an Ostrogradsky scholarship and a scholarship behalf of Vernadsky (programs aimed at supporting the mobility of young scientists).

Additional information can be obtained at the Scientific Career Center of Tomsk Polytechnic University at the address: Lenin Avenue, 30a, the fourth building of TPU, 25 audience or by phone: 8-(3822) -606-247.

Tomsk Polytechnic University – is the largest technical university beyond the Urals was founded in 1896. Since 2013 participates in the program "5-100" to improve competitiveness in the world.

For five years it rose in the QS (Quacquarelli Symonds) rating from the group of 600+ up to the 373rd line in 2018. In the Times Higher Education (THE) ranking for developing countries, in this year the university ranked 21st, having improved its position more than doubled compared with the result of 2017.

In the Shanghai Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) TPU takes place in the group of 901-1000.

In 2018 TPU was one of the most prestigious engineering universities in the world in the Shanghai Subject Ranking. In the field of "Engineering" on the subject of Instruments Science & Technology, the university fell into one group (201-300) with well-known universities of France, Finland and Israel.

Every year, 300 to 400 TPU students take the opportunity to study abroad. In 2017, 358 university students took part in academic mobility programs (334 in 2016). Today at TPU there are more than 90 ongoing agreements on the implementation of various academic mobility programs with foreign universities in 30 countries.

The Scientific Career Center of Tomsk Polytechnic University was created in April 2013, is a structural unit of TPU, is a part of the department of graduate, postgraduate and doctoral studies.
