TOMSK, May 12 – RIA Tomsk. Tomsk sculptor Leonty Usov handed over to the Russian Arctic Convoy Museum in the Scottish city of Aultbea a wood-carved portrait of a graduate of Tomsk Polytechnic University (TPU), a participant in military operations in northern Europe during World War II, the sculptor himself told about it RIA Tomsk.
According to him, several years ago, during a visit to London, he met with a veteran of the Royal Navy, Viktor Volcker. During the Second World War, he participated in escorting cargo and military ships from Scotland to Murmansk and Arkhangelsk. Usov was inspired by his story and decided to make a sculptural portrait of an English veteran.
"A little later, my project director Andrei Olear, having rummaged in documents, discovered the history of Tomsk resident, graduate of TPU Vadim Shamritsky, who served in Murmansk during the war years and protected these convoys. And I decided to make his portrait too, and then transfer these two works to the Scottish Russian Arctic Convoy Museum of the city of Aultbea", – Usov said.
He added that the ceremony of transferring the sculptural portraits of Volcker and Shamrytsky to the Aultbea Museum took place on Saturday, May 11th. It was attended by the general consuls of the Russian Federation and the Federal Republic of Germany in Scotland, representatives of Russian communities in Scotland, as well as coordinators of the "Immortal regiment" movement in Glasgow and Derby.
According to TPU, Shamritsky in 1939 graduated TPU from Energy Faculty. From 1941 to 1944 he served on the "Grozny" torpedo vessel of the Northern Fleet. Participant in numerous operations for the escort of transport. Then he served on the cruiser "Murmansk". In the 1950s, he took part in the creation of the first Soviet nuclear submarine. After 1960 – Senior Researcher at the Central Research Institute of Military Shipbuilding.
