TOMSK, Jul 12 - RIA Tomsk. Institute of Atmospheric Optics of the Siberian Branch of the Academy of Sciences (IAO SB RAS, enters Tomsk Scientific Center, TSC) together with their Chinese colleagues open a research center for atmospheric optics in the city of Hefei (PRC); the first development will be lidar to probe the atmosphere, is reported on the website of TSC on Friday.

"The Institute of Atmospheric Optics of the Siberian Branch of the Academy of Sciences together with colleagues from the Middle Kingdom created the Chinese-Russian Joint Research Center for Atmospheric Optics ... The Chinese partners have shown great interest in joint research in the field of climate research, the propagation of laser radiation in the atmosphere, spectroscopy and lidar sensing", - is said in the statement.

It is specified that the center will develop several areas at once: theoretical fundamental research, scientific instrument making and internships for specialists. For China the study of the atmosphere is particularly relevant because of the high level of anthropogenic air pollution.

It is added that in the near future the international research team will begin to develop a unique lidar for the new generation, which will be able to probe the atmosphere up to 100 kilometers, describing a number of parameters, including aerosol profiles, temperature, humidity and ozone.

"The creation of such a device will open up qualitatively new possibilities for studying the atmosphere in the People's Republic of China. The center will become a permanent platform for long-term internships of Russian specialists who will be able to create and research the capabilities of scientific equipment, for the creation of which there are not always funds in Russian scientific institutions", - is emphasized in the message.

Another area of joint research will be the theory of light scattering on crystals of cirrus clouds at considerable heights, which is being developed by the staff of the Institute of Atmospheric Optics of the Siberian Branch of the Academy of Sciences under the guidance of the professor Alexander Konoshonkin. The application of this theory allows to more accurately assess the effect of such clouds on the radiation balance in the atmosphere, is said on the website of Tomsk Scientific Center.
