TOMSK, Aug 9 – RIA Tomsk. Scientists of Tomsk Polytechnic University (TPU) together with the Russian and Japanese colleagues have developed an antenna for the next-generation 5G networks, which will increase the speed of Internet data transmission, the press service of the university said on Friday.

The fifth generation of mobile communications - 5G - which differs from the previous ones in higher speed, bandwidth and the ability to connect more sensors and smart devices at the same time. In Russia they plan to launch the first commercial network of a new generation by 2020.

“There developed an antenna for networks of a new generation 5G which will increase the speed of Internet data transfer. To create the antenna, scientists from Tomsk Polytechnic University, Tomsk State University (TSU) and Gifu University (Japan) used mesoscale dielectric particles ranging in size from one to ten wavelengths of incident radiation", - is said in the message.

According to the press service, in the process of photonics scientists have established patterns of wavefront formation inside a dielectric particle.

"This allowed us to express the idea of using this approach not only for the formation of localized fields in the near field, but also in the far field - that is, the use of mesoscale dielectric particles as an analogue of the antenna", - the professor of the TPU Division for Electronic Engineering Igor Minin is quoted in the message.

In addition to technological simplicity and huge capabilities, the advantages of the new antenna are its small dimensions - about a wavelength (from 1 to 5 millimeters) and the absence of open parts at the antenna output, which protects it from rain, dust and wind.

"Previously, the "interior" of the antenna was protected from the environment by special screens or inserts that reduced the performance of the antennas. In addition, the new antennas lack metal parts, so it can work near high-voltage wires and electricity, which ensures good electromagnetic compatibility", - reports the university.

According to scientists, the next researches of collective will focus on the study of signal transmission for promising communication systems in the range of 100-300 gigahertz (GHz).

It is clarified that the results of the study were published in the IEEE Antennas and Wireless Propagation Letters journal.

Tomsk Polytechnic University - is the leading technical university of the country. It's founded in 1896 as Tomsk Technological Institute of Practical Engineers of Emperor Nicholas II. It became the first engineering university in the Asian part of the country. Today TPU enters the top 10 universities of Russia and the top 400 universities of the world.

In June, 2019 TPU entered the top 10 ranking of the universities made by the Russian editorial office of the Forbes magazine, taking the ninth place; it is the best result among not capital universities of the country.
