TOMSK, Oct 17 – RIA Tomsk. Scientists of Tomsk universities discussed the international experience in radioactive waste management (RW) at a round table on analysis of international nuclear waste management practices, which was held at Tomsk Polytechnic University (TPU), the university’s press service said on Thursday.

Earlier it was reported that the National Operator for Radioactive Waste Management (NO RAO) plans to build in Seversk (a closed satellite town of Tomsk) a radioactive waste disposal facility (RWDF), which will receive waste of hazard classes III and IV from the activities of the Siberian Chemical Combine (SCC), is included in the fuel company of Rosatom "TVEL") and other enterprises of the nuclear industry of Siberia.

"The regional round table devoted to the review and analysis of international practices in the management of radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel was held the day before at TPU. <...> (Participants) were able to get acquainted with the general practices of working with radioactive waste and learn more about best practices of foreign companies", – is said in the message.

It is noted that the participants of the round table – are scientists of TPU, as well as Tomsk State University and Tomsk State University of Control Systems and Radioelectronics – discussed the practices applied at the enterprises of France, Germany and Hungary, working with radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel.

"I visited the "Paks" Nuclear Power Plant - the only operating nuclear power plant in Hungary. We studied the whole cycle of work: we got acquainted with the station itself, the operation of the reactors, and also visited the hazardous waste repositories of classes I, II, III and IV. Practices with which we met – it’s a kind of positive example that we can focus on", – the press service quotes the TPU professor Egor Yazikov.

Another roundtable participant, TPU professor Leonid Rikhvanov, shared his impressions of working trips to Germany and France. According to him, radioactive waste in these countries is stored in underground structures at a depth of 465 to 850 meters. In addition, the professor noted that the main thing that distinguishes European nuclear scientists – is their active work with public opinion.

"We were able to get acquainted with a different approach to this problem – all emerging issues are discussed at different levels, work is being done with municipal enterprises, territories, and social problems of the population are being simultaneously solved. For example, in a project implemented in Germany, 1.5-2 thousand people are involved", – Rikhvanov is quoted in the message.
