TPU development for aviation entered the top 100 inventions of Russia

TOMSK, Jun 23 – RIA Tomsk. The development of specialists of Tomsk Polytechnic University (TPU) - a thermal flaw detector for the aerospace industry - was included in the list of 100 best inventions according to Rospatent, the university’s press service said on Tuesday.

It is clarified that the Russian Federal Service for Intellectual Property (Rospatent) published a list of the "100 best inventions" based on the results of 2019 and the first half of 2020. This hundred includes a thermal flaw detector for aviation, created at the TPU School of Non-Destructive Testing. It allows to determine, among other things, specific damage to materials caused by impacts on aircraft panels of birds, hail, etc., and thus prevent the destruction of structural components.

“The device creates a “thermal picture” of aviation materials and parts. Structural defects of composites are clearly visible on it. It can be used both at the stage of production of parts and during operation. Development has no analogues in Russia, and in comparison with world standards has advantage - unique software, - is said in the message.

The press service explains that the software allows to model the material control procedure in advance in order to select the optimal mode. In addition, it contains a large set of algorithms for data processing.

"There are more than ten of them in our flaw detector. In commercially available software, and there are no more than a dozen of them in the world, as a rule, there is one main algorithm and one or two additional ones. Our diversity gives us flexibility, we can work with a wider range of materials", - the head of the TPU

Laboratory for Thermal Testing Vladimir Vavilov is quoted in the statement.

As the press service clarifies, the flaw detector allows to work with materials of complex structure, mainly composite. These are the ones that are actively used for the production of modern aircraft, and standard control methods are not enough for them.
