TOMSK, Jul 30 – RIA Tomsk. Tomsk State University (TSU) invites everyone to learn parallel programming using OpenMP and MPI; one can join the course free of charge on the Coursera international platform, TSU teacher Nikolay Bogoslovsky told RIA Tomsk on Thursday.
According to him, the course is intended for university students and professionals who want to master the skills of parallel programming for computers with shared memory and for large cluster systems consisting of many servers.
"Almost all devices – from pocket gadgets to powerful supercomputers – are equipped with multi-core processors. If you write ordinary sequential programs, then the calculations will be carried out only on one processor core. For example, if the processor is four-core, then the sequential program will use only 25% of the capacity of the central processor", – he explains.
According to Bogoslovsky, after completing the course, the student acquires basic knowledge and understanding of how to write programs for multicore and multiprocessor computers: "This will always be relevant. The development of computing technology is moving towards increasing the number of cores in a processor and parallel programming is becoming more and more relevant every year".
As it is said on the course page on the Coursera platform, during the training, students get acquainted with the main architectures of multiprocessor computing systems (MCS), with the OpenMP and MPI standards, which allow writing parallel programs for systems with shared and distributed memory.
"The course will be interesting for all those who deal with programming. To participate, the student must have basic knowledge of programming using C/C++. The course lasts nine weeks. Each week of the course contains video lectures, as well as test assignments", – the website says.
At the end of the training, students who score at least 80% of the points will receive a certificate.
