TOMSK, Mar 4 – RIA Tomsk. Academic reputation of Tomsk Polytechnic University (TPU) in the field of oil and gas business improved in 2021: experts of the British agency Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) assessed the university's achievements in this indicator as 71.9 points out of 100 possible; TPU was recognized as the best in this area in Russia, the press service of TPU said.
Earlier it was reported that in 2020 QS for the first time published the Engineering-Petroleum subject ranking, in which TPU took the 26th place – the best among all Russian universities. On Thursday, in March, a new version of the ranking was released, in which Tomsk Polytechnic University took the 23rd line. The score is based on academic reputation, employer reputation, research citations per paper and h-index.
According to the results of the Engineering – Petroleum subject ranking in 2021, TPU scored 74.5 points. At the same time, compared to last year, the number of points according to the indicator "Academic Reputation" increased – up to 71.9 out of 100 possible, the press service notes. The number of points (81.3) according to the indicator "Employer Reputation" also remains high.
"Such results became possible thanks to the effective publication work of university scientists to increase the number of scientific articles in journals of the 1st and 2nd quartiles, active interaction with foreign scientists with a high Hirsch index, as well as participation in international and interdisciplinary research projects," – TPU Acting Rector Andrey Yakovlev is quoted.
Among productive interdisciplinary research, Yakovlev listed oilfield chemistry and machine learning in geology and field development. As for the reputation of TPU among employers, the high indicator of the university, according to the acting rector, was facilitated by the university's leadership in the Russian Federation in terms of the amount of R&D performed – about 2 billion rubles a year.
"Scientists and engineers of the university are working on solving urgent and breakthrough problems in the interests of large companies. For example, such a large-scale project as Paleozoy ("Paleozoic") is being successfully implemented, aimed at researching and developing hard-to-recover oil reserves, a package of technologies is being developed in the direction of geological and hydrodynamic modeling of oil and gas fields," Yakovlev said.Earlier it was reported that the Paleozoy ("Paleozoic") project was launched in the Tomsk region by Gazprom Neft in cooperation with TPU in 2005. The main goal is to increase the volume of oil production, the reserves of which at traditional fields in the region are running out. In 2025, this will lead to a reduction in production from 10 to 5 million tons per year. The essence of the project is to develop hard-to-recover oil reserves from pre-Jurassic deposits.
