TOMSK, Oct 11 - RIA Tomsk. Director of the Center for Excellence of Tomsk State University (TSU) BioClimLand Sergey Kirpotin will be the guest editor of the special issue of Water magazine; the expert will edit the issue dedicated to the swamps of Siberia, the press service of TSU reported on Monday.
Water is a peer-reviewed open-access journal on water sciences and technologies (Q1), including ecology and water management, which is published by MDPI (USA). It was previously reported that a guest editor in scientific journals of this level should be highly qualified as a scientist, have publications of significant articles or books and experience of peer review in international journals.
"The expert will participate in the selection of articles for the issue" Climatic and anthropogenic changes in the wetlands of Siberia: past, present and future"... This topic is especially relevant in the context of reducing the carbon footprint, since it is the wetlands - primarily peatlands - that are the main sinks and storage of carbon," the report said.
According to the press release, Kirpotin is the only scientist from Russia invited to Water as a member of the editorial board; the scientist is an expert in landscape ecology, life forms and adaptation of organisms.
"The wetlands of Siberia are an extremely important ecosystem not only for Russia, but also for the whole planet. So, the swamps act as its main cooler, help reduce the risks of floods, store and purify fresh water, thereby providing environmental services to all mankind...," Kirpotin quoted in the message. It was also reported that a UNESCO department could be established at TSU to study the impact of the Great Vasyugan mire on the Earth's climate. The prospects for the creation of the department were discussed during a working visit to the Vasyugan mire in June 2021 by the heads of the TSU Siberian Institute of the Future (TSSW), the university's research station Vasyugan and the state reserve Vasyugansky.
