TOMSK, July 1– RIA Tomsk. Tomsk region was formed on August
13, 1944 by the allocation of part of areas and the former Narymsky district
from Novosibirsk region by the decree of presidium of the Supreme Council of
the USSR.
Tomsk
region is located in southeast part of Western Siberia; it is a part of
Siberian Federal District. It borders on the Tyumen, Novosibirsk, Omsk,
Kemerovo regions, Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug and Krasnoyarsk Krai.
The length
of Tomsk region from the North to the south is about 600 kilometers, from the
West to the east is 780 kilometers. Tomsk region (more than 314 thousand square
kilometers) is about 1, 5% bigger than Poland.
The most
part of the region is remote as represents a taiga (the woods occupy 63% of the
area) and swamps (28,9%, including one of the world's largest swamp the
Vasyugan Swamp).
The
population of the region, according to population census of 2010, is about one
million people. 70,2% of the population live in the cities, 29,8% live in rural
areas. There are 120 nationalities in the region, including representatives of
22 nationalities of the North. 90,8% of total number of inhabitants are
Russians, 1,9% of Tatars and 1,6% of Ukrainians.
The
administrative center of the region is the city of Tomsk. It was founded in
1604 and Tomsk was the center of the Tomsk province in 1804-1925 then it lost
the administrative status and became a region only in days of the Great
Patriotic War.
Tomsk
accepted tens evacuated plants, educational, scientific and cultural
institutions during the Great Patriotic War. The enterprises evacuated to Tomsk
became a basis of the local industry and subsequently entered into structure of
the military industrial complex (MIC).
The USSR's
first world-class nuclear center – Siberian Chemical Plant was created in Tomsk
region In the 1950th. Oil production began in the region in the 60-70th, Tomsk
petrochemical plant was constructed.
The region
is included into the top three of Siberian Federal District on the gross
regional product (GRP) per capita. The
greatest specific weight in structure of VRP of Tomsk region has sector of
mining (oil and gas). Then the processing productions, transport and
communication, trade, agriculture, constructions go.
The directions
of new economy develop actively: nanotechnologies, biotechnologies, information
technologies and others.
Medical
(nowadays SSMU) and pedagogical (TSPU) institutes were opened in early 1930th,
construction institute (TSUAB) was opened in 1960th, institute of radio
electronics and electronic equipment (TUSUR), a number of research institutes,
the Campus is constructed.
Tomsk
region is one of the leading centers of innovative development in the country.
The USSR's first science and technology park, the Russia's first
interuniversity business incubator were opened in Tomsk. The Special economic
zone (SEZ) of the technical innovation type in Tomsk began its work in 2006.
