TOMSK, Nov 23 – RIA Tomsk. Scientists of Tomsk State University (TSU) on the basis of the conducted researches put forward a theory that women's tumor cells (cancer of a mammary gland), can gain "immunity" to medicine and create metastasis in some cases under the influence of chemotherapy which has to kill them, the press service of the higher education institution reported.

It is explained that during the research the graduate student of the TSU biological institute Marina Ibragimova and her research supervisor, the Head of Laboratory of cancer virology of Tomsk scientific research institute of oncology Nikolay Litvyakov analyzed tumor cells of 26 women (with cancer of a mammary gland) at the genetic level before preoperative treatment by chemotherapy and after operation.

"The scientists found out that 23% of the examined women under the influence of polychemotherapy have a formation of new tumoral clones bearing amplifications (abnormal duplication of a site of DNA). Almost all 23% of patients had a development of hematogenic metastasis; other patients had no metastasis in the five-year period of supervision", – it is told in the message.

It is specified that the obtained data allowed the scientists to assume that in 23% of cases tumor cells don't perish after preoperative "chemistry", but change. As a result, their clones (which appeared during division of the treated cancer cells) become unreceptive to the medicine. Moreover, chemotherapy, influencing a tumor, perhaps, can cause its development and metastasis.

It is noted that the results of the research are preliminary. The scientists plan to expand selection of patients to confirm or disprove the conclusions. After that they should understand why the tumor evolves under the influence of chemotherapy, and on the basis of it to create technology which will allow to predict consequences of "chemistry".
