TOMSK, Jan 21 – RIA Tomsk. Research engineer of the Siberian physics and technology institute of Tomsk State University (SPTI TSU) Timur Muksunov created "electronic nose" – device, which is capable to estimate quality of various production, to determine diseases by gases, exhaled by a person, and also to distinguish explosive and drugs, the press service of the HEI reports.
It is noted that in 2014 the scientist received a grant for the "Multisensor for Gas Diagnostics and Logistics of Fruits and Vegetables" project. Work on the device was conducted together with the radio physical faculty of TSU. The "electronic nose" analyzes gas mixes by means of semiconductor sensors.
"The smell is defined by set of the gases, which are available in the atmosphere. It is defined, that conductivity of the semiconductor sensor changes at sedimentation of gas molecules from the atmosphere. It also allows to define their presence. <…> At production of the sensor it is possible to achieve it to react the defined gases", – the scientist is quoted.

He noted that the sensors do not react to any concrete gas so far – it is necessary to improve the system for better sensitivity and selectivity. However, the scientist proved on the example of apples that it is possible to distinguish precisely composition of gas mix in the air. They were emitting ammonia, hydrogen sulfide and other gases most intensively closer to the end of an expiration date.
"The control part (of apples) was put in a refrigerator, and the others were left in a room. After 12 hours by means of the device, it was succeeded to reveal that the second part emits gases more intensively, than the control part. <…> By means of the created device it will be possible to define production expiration date more precisely that will affect its quality", – the author of the development explained.
