Tomsk. Scientists
of Tomsk State University (TSU) together with the staff of OJSC
Roskhimzashchita Corporation develop material for neutralization of carbon
monoxide, which can be used at the fires in rooms with a large number of
people, the press service of the higher education institution reported on
Wednesday.
It is noted that the partners work on creation
of the effective catalyst for neutralization of carbon oxide (carbon monoxide)
in emergency situations – in case of the fires in hotels, the subway, mines, at
chemical companies and in other places with big ammount of people.
"Carbon oxide has no color and smell, but
at the same time it has very strong toxicity and high "striking"
capability. Inhalation of the air with concentration of carbon monoxide of 0,4%
is deadly to people. Together with TSU scientists we conduct the joint surveys
directed to development of an effective product for neutralization of carbon
monoxide", – the press service quotes the specialist of Roskhimzashchita
Valery Samarin.

It is noted that the developed
"neutralizer" of carbon monoxide must not contain the precious
metals, for example, used in modern means of protection of platinum-group
metals as they make production of catalysts extremely costly, and means of
protection - inaccessible.
"New material has to have properties which
will allow to operate it in a wide criteria range, in particular at the
increased humidity as moisture "poisons" the known catalysts and
considerably reduces their efficiency", – the press service adds.
It is specified that TSU already has practices
which will help to solve these two problems. In the nearest future scientists
and industrialists plan to carry out joint test of the low-temperature catalyst
for oxidation of the carbon oxide containing manganese, cerium and some other
chemical elements.
