© с сайта Томского политехнического университета TOMSK, Nov 10 – RIA Tomsk. Undergraduates of Tomsk Polytechnic University (TPU) assembled a prototype of the underwater
robot for monitoring of underwater pipelines; the device equipped with
system of video surveillance will become "eyes" of the person under
water, the press service of the university reported on Thursday.
It is specified that the robot "Odysseys" will allow to survey oil and gas pipelines at depths up to 50 meters.
"In
the long term the operator will be able to put on a special helmet and
to see what occurs under water with robot "eyes". At the same time at
turn of the head of the operator there is a turn of the camera of the
underwater robot", – one of developers Ilya Buluyev quoted in the
message.

It is noted that development of polytechnicians differs
from the existing analogs in three parameters. The robot is equipped
with an adaptive control system and stabilization under water that
allows not to heel and not to turn over. Also it is equipped with system
of video surveillance with "effect of presence" and manipulators which
are capable to take freights weighing up to 20 kilograms.
"Manipulators
of the robot can be used for repair of the underwater pipeline. Two
manipulators fix the robot on the necessary section of the pipe, and by
means of the third it is possible to make repair, for example, welding",
– specified Buluyev.
Besides, it is possible to equip the robot
with the additional equipment, for example, water analysis sensors that
it could "feel" leakages on oil pipelines. In the long term the device
can be used not only in oil and gas branch, but also for research of a
subsoil of the World Ocean, search and rescue operations and so on.
