Tomsk. Scientists of Tomsk State University (TSU) study Ob –
one of the most extended rivers of Russia and the greatest rivers of the world;
residents of Tomsk will find out how the ecosystem of Ob changed due to human
activity, the press service of the university reported on Monday.
According to the university, scientists received a
state task within which they will study the landscapes of a flood plain of Ob
changed about 40 years ago as a result of meliorative works and will compare
them to undisturbed analogs. Experts will define, how people and climate change
affect the river biogeocenose, that is the totality of living organisms that
are closely related to each other and with the surrounding inanimate nature.
"Results of researches will allow not only to
estimate influence of anthropogenous and human factors in the past, but also to
simulate life of an ecosystem of Ob in the future. Researchers will determine
consistent patterns of interaction of inundated land and water landscapes with
the atmosphere for increase in accuracy of models of regional climate", –
is said in the message.

The TSU station "Kaybasovo" will become the
main base for the research. Different tools will be used to study a flood plain
of Ob. So, for example, unmanned aerial vehicles will allow to estimate the
river in dynamics: they will fix the flood course, dynamics of residual water
and so on.
Along with assessment of influence of anthropogenous
and climatic changes on an ecosystem of "the second Amazon"
scientists will study its participation in carbon circulation – the main
component of greenhouse gases.
"Ob – is the most extended river of Russia, from
its mouth to a source there are 3650 kilometers. <…> In the spring under
water there is a huge number of vegetation which quickly decays, and the
"grass infusion" saturated with organic carbon turns out. At the same
time nobody definitely knows what biogeochemical processes happen there",
– the director of "BioClimLand" center of TGU Sergey Kirpotin is
quoted in the message.
