Tomsk. Titanium implants with bioactive coatings developed
at the Tomsk Polytechnic University (TPU) successfully survived at three cats,
which earlier have an amputation or limb fractures, the press service of the
university reported on Wednesday.
Earlier it was reported that research team of TPU
under the leadership of Sergey Tverdokhlebov is engaged in a modification of
properties of materials which are used for production of implants. One of
developments – is titanic implant with a bioactive covering – is already
successfully applied in veterinary science. The first patients who tested on
themselves Tomsk innovation became domestic cats Thomas and Kutuzov.
"One of cats had no forepaw, another – have no
hindpaw. Their owners addressed to the veterinary clinic" BEST
"(Novosibirsk), and the doctors suggested them to try out the method of
treatment with the use of implants with our coating. Now both cats are under
observation, veterinarians systematically do them X-ray and a tomography which
results show that implants have successfully took root", – Tverdokhlebov
is quoted in the message.

According to doctors, with artificial "paws"
animals feel as comfortably as if it were their own. After Thomas and Kutuzov
the red cat with a fracture of two hind extremities became the patient.
Implants survived as well as at two previous cats, and now it quite well walking
around the clinic on all four legs.
"Today under needs of veterinarians
polytechnicians made for clinic about 40 titanic implants with bioactive
coverings. Such coverings made on the basis of phosphates of calcium and other
compounds, make implants most similar to the real bone. They are less often
torn away by an organism, better survive and accelerate regeneration
processes", – is noted in the message.
As earlier federal mass media reported, operation on
implantation of titanium prosthesis into Thomas cat bone became unique. It was
the first case in Russia and the second in the world (earlier such operation
was performed in Great Britain).
