Tomsk, Karina Sapunova. Researches of graduate student of
Tomsk State University (TSU) Olga Zolotukhina will help specialists of
Roskosmos to predict for several months the weather, unsuitable for rockets
launching at the Baikonur and Vostochny cosmodromes, the press service of the
university reported on Monday.
According to TSU, the effective way to precisely
predict adverse time for space rockets launching doesn't exist yet. Meanwhile,
it is important not only from the point of view of safety, but also because
transfer of launch leads to huge financial losses.
"The graduate student of Department of
Meteorology and Climatology of TSU Faculty of Geology and Geography Olga
Zolotukhina – is the only scientist-meteorologist in Russia researching the
atmospheric conditions limiting the launch of space rockets at the Baikonur and
Vostochny cosmodromes. Recommendations for Roskosmos will become the result of
scientific work of the graduate student of TSU", – is said in the message.

It is specified that values of parameters of wind,
critical for performance of this or that operation, are reflected in
operational documentation on each space rocket, and the meteorological
parameters close to critical are fixed five-seven times a year. The graduate
student conducts her work, based on weather data for many years.
According to the press service, Zolotukhina watches
changes in the atmosphere, working as the weather forecaster at the Baikonur
cosmodrome. Assessment of characteristics of wind is carried out by results of
aerological sounding which allows to obtain data on speed and the direction of
wind in a layer from Earth up to the height of 25 kilometers. On the basis of
this information the decision on the possibility of launching is made.
It is added that also safety of launching is
influenced by the convective phenomena (ascending and descending movements of
large air masses, as a result of which, for example, tornadoes appear). Results
of the analysis of data on them will also be included into recommendations for
Roskosmos. It is supposed that results of scientific work will be transferred
to state corporation in the summer of 2017 – after Zolotukhina defends the
thesis.
