Institute of Tomsk State University (BI TSU) and divers of the "SKAT"
University Center conducted a hydrobiological survey of the Mediterranean Sea
in the northern part of Egypt, where the construction of a NPP is planned;
biologists studied the water, flora and fauna, the press service of the
university reports on Monday.
It is specified that in the hydrobiological study of the Mediterranean Sea
participated hydrobiologists, ichthyologists, zoologists, radiophysicists and
divers of the SKAT Center of TSU, who were engaged in sampling at various
depths in the water column and on the seabed.
"Engineering and ecological surveys are an indispensable condition and
basis for the development of project documentation for the construction (of the
nuclear power plant in Egypt – Ed.)... The results of the studies conducted
before the construction – is the starting point for further monitoring and
ensuring environmental safety in the territory of an object", – the press
service quoted the Director of BI TSU Danil Vorobyov.
In the framework of the study, the biologists of TSU determined the relative
numbers, locations of wintering, spawning of coastal fish, their migration routes,
which would predict the changes in the population as a result of NPP
construction.
It is noted that in 2017–2018 specialists of BI TGU will have two more trips
to Egypt – in autumn and winter, which will allow to carry out comprehensive
assessment of the studied ecosystems. Tomsk biologists will then give
recommendations to Egyptian specialists to develop a monitoring program in the
industrial facility area.
