TOMSK, Nov 14 – RIA Tomsk. European Organization for Nuclear
Research (CERN) transferred a sample of one of diamonds, on the basis of which
detectors for the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) are created, to scientists of
Tomsk Polytechnic University (TPU) for testing and further modernization, the
press service of TPU reports on Tuesday.
Earlier it was reported that TPU
scientists participate in the LHC upgrade. Polytechnics are involved in the
Beam Radiation Instrumentation and Luminosity project on measurement of
characteristics of bunch of elementary particles, they will carry out the
analysis of existing and development of new, more reliable diamond detectors
for the LHC located in CERN.
As the press service of the
university reports, the detectors fixing collisions of elementary particles on
the LHC are created on the basis of diamonds, one of which is transferred to
TPU. Such diamonds are created especially for CERN in single copies.
"Till January, (2018)
polytechnics will investigate the sample sent them for the purpose of its
further modernization. Then the ready diamond detector will be sent to CERN
where it will work within a year. If results of the research are successful,
then further scientists will improve quality of work of other diamond detectors
on the LHC by means of the technology", – it is said in the statement.

It is explained that now the
scientists investigate properties of diamond, fulfill various physical
processes with it. The first observations showed that, perhaps, diamond
detectors in CERN behave variously in identical conditions because of metallization
(when a thin film of metal is applied on diamond). Therefore it was decided in
TPU to synthesize diamond layers with boron alloyed in them on a nonconducting
body of the detector.
"After detailed inspection … we
will apply on it (diamond) such diamond covering and in January, 2018 we will
install the detector on the basis of this diamond on the collider in a special
research zone … In January of the 2019th we will take it and we will study the
changes which happened in it and in detectors with usual metallization", –
the engineer of "Pulse-beam, electric discharge and plasma
technologies" laboratory of TPU Vitaly Okhotnikov is quoted.
If results of the experiment are
positive, then scientists in the future will be able to upgrade also other
diamond detectors of CERN. Also it is reported that one more problem of the TPU
scientists is to create scientific and technical base for cultivation and
improved diamond detectors which CERN plans to use in the near future.
