TOMSK, Aug
15 – RIA Tomsk. Tomsk Polytechnic University (TPU) for the first time entered
the Shanghai Ranking of universities (Academic Ranking of World Universities,
ARWU), in which it took place in the group 901-1000; compilers also included
the university in the list of candidates in the top 500 rating, is reported on
the website of the university on Wednesday.
Earlier it
was reported that the Shanghai Ranking is considered as one of the most
objective, it is compiled on the basis of research activities of more than 1,3
thousand universities in the world. The rating takes into account the quality
of education and faculty, scientific activity and average effectiveness of the
employee.
"Tomsk
Polytechnic University was rated by the institutional prestigious rating
(Shanghai Ranking - Ed.) for the first time and in the 901-1000 group included
in the list of candidates in the top 500", - is said in the report.
It is noted
that in total in the ARWU rating in 2018 more than 1500 universities of the
world are included. According to the ARWU website, the first line in the
ranking is occupied by Harvard University (USA), the second - Stanford
University (USA), the third - University of Cambridge (Great Britain). The best
result among the Russian universities was demonstrated by Moscow State
University, it took the 86th line of the rating.
"In
the world there are about 200,000 universities. Let's imagine three peaks of
the 200-thousandths: QS, THE (world ratings of Quacquarelli Symonds and Times
Higher Education - Ed.) and ARWU. So, until 2011, TPU was not even at the
bottom of any of them. And now, from the top of the QS we are in 373 steps,
301-350 steps separate us from the top of THE, and up to the top of the ARWU we
have to make 901-1000 steps", - the rector Petr Chubik of TPU is quoted in
the message.
It is added
that this year the compilers of the Shanghai Ranking published a list of
universities which are candidates for entry into the top 500 - universities
from among those included in the range of 501-1000 may be included in it. It
had eight Russian universities, including TPU: "All the applicant
universities are participants in the "5-100" project.
It was also
reported that in 2018 TPU was one of the most prestigious engineering universities in the world in the Shanghai Ranking's Global Ranking of Academic
Subjects. In the field of "Engineering" in the subject of Instruments
Science & Technology, the university was in one group (201-300) with the
famous universities of France, Finland and Israel.
