TOMSK, Nov 30 – RIA Tomsk. Tomsk Polytechnic University (TPU) confirmed high positions among
Russian universities in the Engineering and Technology subject ranking,
compiled by the British agency Times Higher Education (THE); also Tomsk
Polytechnic University for the first time entered the rating of THE Computer
Science, the press service of TPU reported on Friday.
Earlier it was reported that in 2017, TPU entered the
group 151-175 and became the second among Russian universities in the subject
rating of THE in Engineering and technology direction, giving way to Moscow
State University. In the general ranking of leading universities in the world
of THE, TPU in 2018 entered the group 501-600.
According to the press service of TPU, the British
edition of THE on Friday, November 30, presented the results of two university
rankings in separate subject areas: "Engineering and Technology" and
"Computer Science (informatics)". The published part of the
"Computer Science (informatics)" rating includes 684 universities,
and the "Engineering and Technologies" – 903.
"Tomsk Polytechnic University was included in the
201-250 group in the "Engineering and Technology" rating. Among all
Russian universities only Moscow State University has higher positions. Also
TPU entered the Computer Science (Informatics) rating for the first time, group
401-500", – is said in the statement.
It is added that high indicators of TPU are based on
extensive engineering studies of scientists of Tomsk Polytechnic University in
various fields. The University is an active participant of six large
collaborations of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) and
participates in the upgrade of the Large Hadron Collider's detectors.

The THE ranking is compiled on the basis of an
analysis of the activities of universities and a global expert survey of the
academic community and employers. Participants were evaluated on 13 indicators:
the level of teaching, quality of research activities and volume of citation of
scientific works, inclusion of the university in innovation processes and
global researches.
The Times Higher Education World University Rankings
(THE) – is one of the most influential annual world rankings of universities,
compiled by Times Higher Education magazine. It takes into account five
indicators: the quality of teaching; volume and authority of scientific
activity and income from it; citation; proportion of foreign students and
teachers and international cooperation; income derived from the practical
application of scientific potential.
TPU – is the largest technical university beyond the
Urals. In five years, it rose in the QS (Quacquarelli Symonds) rating from the
group of 600+ to the 373rd line in 2018. In the Times Higher Education (THE)
ranking for developing countries, this year the university took the 21st place,
having improved its position more than twice as compared with the result of
2017.
Since 2013 it participates in the "5-100"
program to improve competitiveness in the world. In 2018, TPU entered one of
the most prestigious engineering universities in the world in the
ShanghaiRanking's Global Ranking of Academic Subjects. In the field of
"Engineering" on the subject of Instruments Science & Technology,
the university got into one group (201-300) with well-known universities of France,
Finland and Israel.
TPU is also entering the Academic Ranking of World
Universities (ARWU), in which it take place among 901-1000 group.
