TOMSK, Feb 21 – RIA Tomsk. Employee of Institute of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics (Scientific Research Institute IAMM TSU) Konstantin Zhiltsov and colleagues from Institute of Applied Mechanic (IAM) RAS investigates features of vortex mechanism of suppression of tsunami waves with underwater barriers; scientists develop mathematical models of sea barriers and make experiments in special hydrodynamic installation, press service of university reports.

It is specified that the most killing tsunami in modern history happened in 2004. It was provoked by the earthquake measuring more than 9 points which occurred in the Indian Ocean on December 26. Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, Thailand and other countries suffered from the tsunami. According to different data, from 225 to 300 thousand people died.

"The employee of Scientific Research Institute IAMM TSU Konstantin Zhiltsov together with colleagues from IAM RAS investigates features of the vortex mechanism of suppression of waves of tsunami underwater barriers. Scientists make experiments in vitro and build mathematical models which will help to pick up the optimum design and height of a barrier necessary for reduction of destructive force of huge waves", – it is said in the statement.

It is noted that the certain countries try to solve this problem due to construction in a coastal zone or in shallow water of barriers which tower above sea level on 10-15 meters. However in Japan in 2011 the wave height of a tsunami reached 15-19 meters. Completely to be protected from such wave due to its full reflection, the barrier 30-38 meters high above sea level is necessary.

"To avoid large-scale destructions on the coast, it is not obligatory to build a multimeter wall and to stop a tsunami. Our researches showed that <…> a considerable part of energy of a tsunami (up to 50%) can be absorbed by vortex streams which are formed in interaction of a wave with the barrier having an optimum design. The physics of these processes is rather difficult", – the press service quotes Zhiltsov.

Mathematical models in which creation Zhiltsov is engaged help to investigate features of distribution of waves of a tsunami and their interaction with various barriers. The experimental and theoretical part of researches is conducted in the IAM RAS special hydrodynamic installation that allows to confirm the accuracy of theoretical models and numerical calculations, it is noted in the message.
