TOMSK, Aug 13 – RIA Tomsk. Tomsk Polytechnic University (TPU) launched 16 new master's programs in 2019,
including three – in English, the TPU Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs
Alexander Vagner told RIA Tomsk on Tuesday.
In
English
"This
year 16 new (master's) programs were opened. <...> In addition, we open
and develop programs in English, which our students and foreign students study
in. Three new programs are open this year", – Vagner said.
He added
that in total there are 18 programs in English in the university. Every year
they are processed and updated. New programs – are Nuclear Science and
Technology, Materials Science and Physics.
He also
noted that 10% of all classes at TPU are held in English. They are led by about
100 people – foreigners or teachers who have studied at foreign universities.
"English
in the technical field – is a specific, complicated thing ... The university
has long understood that entering the international arena, international
competition with other universities without English language is
impossible", – the interlocutor of the agency noted.
Master's
program – is a challenge for the university
He also
added that enrollment in a magistracy – is a challenge for the university every
year. That is why every year some programs are added, and some leave. This year,
for example, about 30 master's programs were closed: in some of them students
were not interested.
Vagner said
that the new master's programs (both in English and in Russian) are
narrow-profile and practice-oriented, and specialists who prepare for them are
in demand both in Russia and abroad. These are such programs as "Natural
Gas Liquefaction Technologies and Industrial Heat Engineering",
"Technosphere Security", "Digital Marketing", "Digital
Energy" and others.
Vagner
added that these programs are very popular, the competition for them is about 3
people per place. Last year, this figure was 2.2 people per place.
"I
would not say that master's programs are not in demand. According to our
statistics, 85% of our university students continue to study at the master's
program. <...> Last year, out of about 950 graduated bachelor degree
students, about 800 went to the master's program. And at all we have more than
a thousand places (1242 state-funded places in a magistracy)", – the
interlocutor of the agency told.
