TOMSK, Mar 4 – RIA Tomsk. The British agency
Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) published five annual subject rankings, where more
than 1350 world universities were rated in 48 disciplines. Tomsk State University (TSU) improved its indicator in linguistics, and for the first time
noted in "Biology" and "English language and literature",
the press service of the university reported.

It was previously reported that the QS rankings is
based on academic reputation, results of research activities of universities
and reputation of university among employers.
As follows from QS materials, in 2020 more than 1350
universities of the world were rated in five subject areas: "Arts and
Humanities", "Engineering and Technology", "Life Sciences
and Medicine", "Natural Sciences", "Social Sciences and
Management". In each of the areas the achievements of universities in
several disciplines were taken into account, the total number of which was 48.
Tomsk universities are represented in four subject
areas: "Arts and Humanities" (TSU is on the 238th place),
"Engineering and Technology" (Tomsk Polytechnic University (TPU) is
on the 282nd, TSU on the 391st), and "Natural Sciences" (TSU is on
the 208th, TPU is on the 386th) and "Social Sciences and Management"
(TSU is on the 335th place), the QS website reported.
"TSU rose in the category of
"Linguistics" (group 101-150) ("Arts and Humanities"
subject area – Ed.), "Chemistry" (group 351-400) and "Material
Science" (group 251-300) ("Natural Sciences" subject area –
Ed.)", – the press service said.
It is noted that TSU first entered the rankings in
English language and literature (group 251-300) in the "Arts and
Humanities" subject area, as well as in biology (group 501-550), which is
included in the subject area "Natural Sciences".

It was previously reported that in the overall ranking
of the best universities of the world according to QS, TSU in the summer of
2019 took the 268th place. Over the past five years, the university has risen
283 lines and is now included in 25% of the strongest. TPU in 2019 was at 387th
place.
It was also reported that in 2013 TSU and TPU were
included in the 15 leading universities of the Russian Federation, which are
allocated additional funding to increase international competitiveness. In
2020, the amount of support from the state budget will amount to 875 million
and 437 million rubles respectively.
