TOMSK, Jul 1 – RIA Tomsk. Admission to Tomsk Polytechnic University (TPU) as an engineer - is not only the first step towards obtaining a prestigious profession in the most demanded areas, but also a practically guaranteed job. For example, in the last academic year one TPU graduate going to work after the university had on average three vacancies in Russia and abroad.

How TPU graduates find jobs, RIA Tomsk was told by an expert of the TPU practice and employment department Vera Tsukublina.

In contact

Promotion of student employment at Polytechnic is based on three “pillars”. The first is – constant contact with the employer. From the first year students undergo practical training, increasing their professional potential.

TPU organizes a variety of contact events – from traditional fact-finding tours to enterprises to telebridges with corporations. During TV bridges the leaders of such large companies as Rosseti, Rosatom, Gazprom and others motivate students, discuss requests and needs for the future.

"In parallel, meetings or webinars from company specialists are held for polytechnics, disciplines are taught that develop competencies necessary for successful employment, for example, emotional intelligence – it qualitatively distinguishes a specialist from, roughly speaking, a machine that can replace him", – says Tsukublina.

All this shows students the full range of growth opportunities as professional engineers.

Market rules

The second "pillar" – is the so-called career event. These are interviews, tests conducted by future employers, Career Days and much more.

“We hold more than 150 such events during the school year (except for local meetings for small groups of students). So, representatives of Schlumberger (an oilfield services company with headquarters in Houston and Paris) come about three times a year, each year – Exxon Neftegas Limited (subsidiary of the US oil and gas company ExxonMobil) and many other companies", – says the agency’s interlocutor.

For employment in international companies, students need to be fluent in English. In this students are helped by both foreign language classes and additional courses, which are in abundance at Polytechnic University.

At meetings with students, international and Russian employers hold master classes, business and team games on solving real cases. Experts observe polytechnics and note for themselves the most active ones, thereby increasing their chances of getting a job.

As for Career Days, this TPU event is considered one of the largest among university counterparts in Tomsk.

“Career days at TPU are held twice a year. And we always have a full house for employers. So, from 50 to 80 companies visit us from Kaliningrad to Sakhalin. This is a real market. Students not only passively wait for offers, but come up with offers themselves, choose a future partner", – says Tsukublina.

She explains that knowledge of the specifics of the company, the technologies that the student receives in the process of education and interaction with partners of the university, – is all a significant advantage that increases its competitiveness.

Practice for hunters

The third "pillar" – is the distribution.

“According to the data for June (and at this time we make the first cut of employment data), about 40% of graduates already had a job – largely due to practice. This is a natural process: student leaves for practice, shows himself, receives an offer”, – explains Tsukublina.

According to the agency’s interlocutor, among two thousand graduates in the past academic year, 800 people expressed a desire to start work: “And we got about 3,500 real vacancies for them –with a good level of wages, with career opportunities”.

She also added that, as the results of special tests show, by the end of the university, most students at TPU are forming a career type, called a "hunter." Such graduates are distinguished by their determination, they know what they want and how much they cost, their ambitions are supported by relevant knowledge and skills.

"How is TPU generally different from others? Applied practical skills, their development, tandem with the employer, and compliance with the needs of the market have always been at the core here. An engineer – is one who must think and work ahead of the curve. And this thinking is formed precisely thanks to the synthesis of industry and education", – she concludes.
