TOMSK, Jul 6 – RIA Tomsk. Studying the behavior of stars and developing methods for finding life in space, creating an economy with clean industrial production, and much more will be the students who enter this year's "Condensed Matter Physics" master's degree program at Tomsk Polytechnic University.

TPU is implementing this program with a longtime friend – University Burgundy Franche-Comté (France). Both universities are considered leaders in the field of physics. The training is conducted in Tomsk and two French cities, while Russian citizens have a chance to get the state-funded place and receive a scholarship to cover living expenses in France.

Reception of documents for this master's degree program is already underway at TPU. RIA Tomsk was told about the opportunities offered to students by the program manager from the Tomsk side Andrey Lider.

Knowledge from the best in their field

The University of Burgundy Franche-Comté (UBFC) is participating in the ratings of world universities according to THE World University Rankings. It is a state university uniting seven research and educational institutions of higher education and research institutes in the Burgundy-Franche-Comté region (BCF).

UBFC holds a leading position in the world in rankings in the physical sciences. Tomsk Polytechnic University, in turn, is included in the international TOP-150 of the best universities in the same direction. The long-standing friendly relations between the two universities and joint projects led to the creation of a "Condensed Matter Physics" master's program.

The double degree program is taught in English by professors from Tomsk, France, Great Britain, Germany, Spain and Italy. Training sites are university laboratories and classrooms in three cities – Tomsk, Dijon and Besancon.

The initiator of the program from the French side was  professor Claude Leroy, who has long-standing ties with Tomsk. In 2017, he was awarded the TPU medal for the development of scientific activities and the promotion of Tomsk Polytechnic abroad. UBFC professor Stefan Geran leads the program in France.

“At TPU the program is provided by School of Nuclear Science & Engineering and Research School of High-Energy Physics. From the French side – the UBFC International Master's and Postgraduate Training School”, – says Andrey Lider.

He explains: this master's program is aimed at training in the field of fundamental theoretical and experimental physics with a special emphasis on physics, photonics, nano- and quantum technologies.

Thus, its graduates will possess knowledge in the field of priority areas of scientific and technical activity, which is actively developing both in Russia and Europe, and around the world. And it is in this area that the demand for highly qualified personnel is growing annually.

"Students leave the university as engineers and can work in companies that are at the highest level involved in telecommunications, creation of new materials, research and development in the field of photonics, quantum technologies and so on", – the agency’s interlocutor said.

Real projects

Andrey Lider adds that this program gives students a unique chance - to become as competent as possible in the fields of physics, optical communications, optoelectronics, laser technologies, quantum informatics, nanotechnology, nanophotonics, nanobionics.

“At the same time, after two years of study, the graduate will be the holder of a double diploma of two prestigious universities. As a bonus, there’s a chance to enrich the experience and culture of different countries, to participate in real scientific projects”, – he emphasizes.

Focus on research activities – one of the advantages of the program. Each student participates in a real project of universities and their partners in one of the areas of physics.

Among the projects – there is a study of the fundamental properties of substances by high resolution spectroscopy.

“The study will allow students to improve and create new methods for detecting dangerous or harmful substances in the atmosphere, to form methods for remote sensing of the Earth’s atmosphere. Also, these approaches can be used to study the behavior of stars, processes in space, and study the atmosphere of distant planets”, – the agency’s interlocutor said.

According to him, perhaps due to these methods, life will be discovered on the planets of other stellar systems.

In addition, students will be able to join projects in the field of hydrogen energy - they are aimed at creating a new economy with clean industrial production and transport.

Studying in two countries

After a year of master's studies at TPU, students go to practice in France for a period of three months, and then spend a whole semester here. They can apply for a scholarship paid by the French side to cover the costs of staying abroad.

According to Andrey Lider, Russian students have the opportunity to get a state-funded palce (12 places are provided), those who wish in addition to this amount and foreign citizens are enrolled on a fee basis. More detailed conditions for admission are published on the TPU website.
