Tomsk team in the Olympic sport of breaking will appear in 2021

TOMSK, Mar 31 – RIA Tomsk. The championship and competition of the Tomsk region in breaking will be held on Friday; winners and prize-winners will go as part of the national team from the region to the Russian championship, which will be held in Moscow in spring, organizer Alexander Vashchuk told RIA Tomsk on Wednesday.

Breakdancing debuted as an Olympic sport at the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics, which were held in Buenos Aires in October. The first champion was the Russian Sergei Chernyshev. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has approved the inclusion of break dance, rock climbing, skateboarding and surfing in the 2024 Olympics program.

"Breaking was recognized as an Olympic sport two years ago. Such competitions for the first time will be held in Tomsk, and the champions of the Tomsk region will be determined based on their results. They will form a national team that will represent our region at the Russian Championship in Moscow, which will also be held in April, as well as at other all-Russian competitions," Vashchuk said.

According to him, the national team will include the owners of the first, second and third places in each age category. In total, 150 athletes are expected to participate, of which about 20 are girls. The age of the youngest participants is seven years old, adult participants will compete in the category from 19 years old.

Participants of the competition are residents of Tomsk and Seversk, students of Tomsk sports clubs where break dance is taught, such as UDI, Skillz, FLY-B, Energizer.
