Memorial plaque to cyberneticist Yampolsky appeared on TPU's building

TOMSK, Sep 23 – RIA Tomsk. A memorial plaque in honor of Vladimir Yampolsky, a renowned Tomsk scientist and founder of the Cybernetics Center of Tomsk Polytechnic University (TPU), who worked at the university for 60 years, has been installed on the facade of the Center, the university's press service said on Thursday.

Vladimir Yampolsky was born in the Odessa region. In 1960, he graduated from TPU and remained at the university, rising through the ranks from a graduate student to a professor, director of the Computing Center of the university. Yampolsky managed large-scale projects of industry and regional significance in the field of information technologies. He initiated the creation of the university's Cybernetics Center. The professor passed away at the age of 82 in July 2020.

"On Thursday (September 23), a commemorative plaque was unveiled in honor of Vladimir Yampolsky, a famous Tomsk scientist in the field of cybernetics and informatics and creator of the Cybernetics Center of Tomsk Polytechnic University. The granite plaque is installed on the facade of the TPU Cybernetics Center", – the TPU press service said.

It is noted that the ceremony was attended by TPU Acting Rector Dmitry Sednev and the Speaker of the Regional Duma Oksana Kozlovskaya, Yampolsky's associates and colleagues – professors of TPU Engineering School of Computer Science & Robotics, who worked under the leadership of Yampolsky for many years.

"Polytechnics are people who can look into the future. And Vladimir Zakharovich was one of them. Everything around us – digitalization and cybernetic systems – was his brainchild. His ability to combine science, organization and artistry will serve as an example to future generations", – Sednev is quoted.

It is added that the memorial plaque to Yampolsky is made of granite, with a portrait of the scientist and a memorable text engraved by laser. After the unveiling of the memorial, guests of the ceremony paid their respects to the scientist by laying flowers.
