TSU stations are into international network of nature studying bases

TOMSK, Aug 31 – RIA Tomsk. Three research stations of Tomsk State University (TSU) located in Siberia were included into network of the international INTERACT project uniting scientific bases in 14 countries of the world for studying of changes of the environment the press service of the higher education institution reported on Wednesday.

"Three TSU research stations – in a flood plain of Ob, in Altai and Yamal – will become available to scientists from around the world thanks to grant support of the program of the European Union "Horizon of 2020". In particular, foreign researchers will have an opportunity to systematically study the territory of Siberia from the point of view of climate change at TSU stations for the first time", – it is said in the message.

It is specified that it is about Aktru, Kaybasovo and Hanymey stations. Members of consortium INTERACT will have an opportunity to work at these objects. They will also have an access to databases and materials of TSU scientists as all results received within INTERACT are available to all its participants.

It is noted that TSU scientists will be able to come and work at 76 other INTERACT stations in 14 countries of the world. For example, they will be able to receive and compare data on thawing of glaciers in Altai and their condition with information about ice on the island of Spitsbergen as data collection within the project is conducted by a single technique.

It is added that also the higher education institution is involved in process on creation of system of studying of the Arctic and climate changes. It is planned both implementation of own educational projects, and participation in programs of online education and development of this system in general – for example, introduction of projects of "augmented reality".

According to the higher education institution, Horizon of 2020 program allocated 10 million euros for four years for INTERACT. The consortium unites 47 partner organizations from around the world. TSU's share as one of the main participants is nearly a quarter of one million euros.

The purpose of the international network of researches and monitoring INTERACT is creation of opportunities for identification, analysis, forecasting and rapid response to various changes in the environment and land use in the Arctic. Project coordinator is Terry Callaghan, member of the Swedish Royal Academy of Sciences, professor of University of Sheffield and TSU.
