TOMSK, Jul 17 – RIA Tomsk. Tomsk State University (TSU) for the first time entered the Shanghai Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (ARWU) in the direction of "Earth Sciences"; in addition, the university kept last year's result in the field of physics, the Vice-Rector of TSU for Academic Research reported RIA Tomsk on Tuesday.
Earlier it was reported that Tomsk universities - Tomsk State University and Tomsk Polytechnic University - entered the ARWU rating for the first time in 2017. TSU then got into the group 401-500 in physics and in the group 101-150 in metallurgy. In this rating, universities are assessed on the effectiveness of scientific activity, thematic citation index, international cooperation, number of publications in leading journals, availability of scientific awards and awards of the international level.
"For us, the Shanghai rating is "examination" one, the representation in it is stated in our development program. It "works" not with expert opinion but with documents, it takes into account only the highest achievements of universities represented in the best scientific journals. For the first time TSU entered the Shanghai rating in the direction of "Earth Sciences", it entered the group 401-500", - Ivonin said.
According to the Vice-Rector, the success of the university is caused, in particular, due to the fact that the university is currently implementing a megagrant under the leadership of Richard Ernst. The research will allow to determine the age of geological objects with high accuracy and clarify the potential of the Siberian deposits.In addition, Ivonin added, good results were demonstrated by the university in the field of physics - the TSU also joined the group 401-500, having kept last year's indicators.
It was also previously reported that in 2018 the subject rating of the universities Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) was published, in which TSU increased its indicators in the areas of "Natural Sciences" (in 2018 - the 293th place, in 2017 - group 401-500) and "Humanities and Art" (in 2018 - 201-250 - at the level of 2017).
