TOMSK, Feb 28 – RIA Tomsk. Tomsk Polytechnic University improved its position in the QS ranking in "Chemistry" and remained in "Chemical Engineering". The university was first noted in "Materials Science". The director of the Research School of Chemistry & Applied Biomedical Sciences Mehman Yusubov believes: for some of them, it’s real to enter the top 100 within five years.
Earlier it was reported that the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) agency published subject rankings of 2019. TPU entered the group 201-250 in the disciplines "Chemical Engineering" (compared with last year's position has not changed) and "Mechanical Engineering" (position higher than in 2018: 250-300). In "Chemistry" the university moved from group 451-500 to 401-450. In "Electrical & Electronic Engineering and Physics" moved to the group 351-400 (in 2018 - 301-350).
Also TPU was first marked by experts in the disciplines of "Materials Science" (group 301-350), "Business and Management" (451-500) and "Computer Science" (501-550).
High level chemistry
It is the subject ratings that best reflect the progress of TPU, considers the Doctor of Chemistry, Professor, Director of the Research School of Chemistry & Applied Biomedical Sciences Mehman Yusubov:
"We - are POLYtechnic University, we have many directions, and it is difficult for us to compete with classical universities. The classification "research engineering university" suits us. Therefore, our niche is - a subject rating. If we grow in engineering directions ("Chemical Engineering", "Mechanical Engineering" and so on), this means that we have correctly put scientific research".
Yusubov called the promotion of Polytechnic University in the discipline "Chemistry" a big victory, where the university first went up 50 points at once:
"Chemistry is practiced everywhere, in all leading universities of the world! And joining the group 401-450 confirms: fundamental chemistry in TPU is of a very high level. In turn, engineering chemistry is based on it, where we are in the group 201-250 (there is much less competition ).In general, our chemical direction is historically strong, it was one of the first branches of the Tomsk Institute of Technology, as evidenced by the discovery of the Kizhner reaction in 1910. In my opinion, Tomsk Polytechnic University may enter the top 100 in the “Chemical Engineering” in the next five years”.
Nature level
Mehman Yusubov especially highlighted the success of the university in the discipline "Materials Science": "Materials Science - is the hottest topic for all universities today. And the fact that we first entered the rating in this area, and even immediately in the group 301-350, - is the great achievement".
He emphasized that promotion in the ranking on the subject "Science of Materials" is also largely associated with research carried out in the Research School of Chemistry & Applied Biomedical Sciences. Over the past year, the level of development has increased significantly, as evidenced by the level of articles in high-ranking journals.
"(Our team) developed methods for controlling wettability on polymer surfaces (ACS Applied Materials and Interfaces, Q1, IF = 8.097), new plasmon-catalyzed reduction reactions (J. Phys. Chem. C., Q1, IF = 4.484 ), as well as advanced materials based on hybrid scaffolds for osteogenesis (ACS Applied Materials and Interfaces, Q1, IF = 8.097) ", - lists Yusubov.
And he continues:
“In addition, new X-ray radiation detection systems (ACS Applied Materials and Interfaces, Q1, IF = 8.097) and high-resolution direct optical observation methods (ACS Photonics, Q1, IF = 6.88) have been developed. For the first time, polymer "carpets" were synthesized on graphene without introducing defects into it. Then on the basis of this hybrid material was made a microscopic solar battery with molybdenum disulfide (J. Mater. Chem. Q1, IF 5.976)".
Now the team is preparing an article for Nature Communications journal, published by Nature’s publishing group and covering the natural sciences. By the way, the publication in Nature was one of the goals of Yusubov when he headed the Research School of Chemistry & Applied Biomedical Sciences.
