TOMSK, July 10 – RIA Tomsk. Tomsk and Beijing scientists will study how native languages influence their gift in mathematics. It was reported on the site of Tomsk State University (TSU).
"The scientists from the Laboratory for Cognitive Studies of language of TSU (part of the International Center for Fundamental and Mathematical Physics) and Beijing Normal University will conduct the joint cognitive researches and studyy features of mathematical training. The agreement about it was reached during the international seminar", – it is told in the message.
It is specified that the scientists will investigate how the features of Russian and Chinese languages influence gift of native speakers in mathematics. Perhaps, the research will be expanded and it will also include Finnish and English languages.
"One of the scientific directions of our center is cognitive researches connected with mathematical abilities, features of mathematical training. There is a so-called linguistic hypothesis in this direction. It is the influence of language on spatial and mathematical cognition (process of knowledge)", – the head of the center Yulia Kovas told.
According to her, the scientists consider a hypothesis according to which Chinese with its hieroglyphic system promotes different studying aspects in mathematics.
