TOMSK, Oct 18 – RIA Tomsk. Geneticists of Tomsk State University (TSU) created a hybrid of Italian and Russian species of mosquitoes, assuming that it help to understand why different types have various arrangements of chromosomes in a kernel and whether it influences features of species, the TSU employee of the laboratory of evolutionary cytogenetics Gleb Artyomov reported.

"Evolution of malarial mosquitoes is followed by reorganization of chromosomes in a kernel. Evolution is also connected with change of ability of mosquitoes to have malaria, and also with preference of mosquitoes, for example, some types suck blood at animals more often, and some at people. But it is unclear, whether these aspects are connected. This is a basic research", – he told.

The scientist noted that the one of opportunities to understand this question is studying of an order of chromosomes at a hybrid of two similar types. For example, the Italian malarial mosquitoes Anopheles labranchiae and the Russian Anopheles atroparvus which it is possible to distinguish only by means of the genetic analysis: in particular, these types have a different spatial organization of chromosomes.

Artyomov emphasized that these rules can be extended on all live organisms. So, results of the research will be useful not only when studying insects, but also to all who deals with issues of a specific variety of plants and animals.

According to the press service of the higher education institution, when collecting materials for research Tomsk scientists used the help of colleagues from Italy. In particular, thanks to contacts with colleagues at the Roman University La Sapienza, they could work in laboratory of one of the world's largest specialists in malarial mosquitoes of Alessandra de la Torre.

"The collecting of material took place on farms of Tuscany. There on a narrow strip between the Apennines and the Tyrrhenian Sea in coastal areas and on the cultivated rice fields mosquitoes Anopheles labranchiae live. Catching of insects took place according to the same scheme, as in Russia: they were caught on farms where female mosquitoes, having got drunk blood of pets, were going to postpone eggs", – is specified in TSU.
