TOMSK, Sep 6 – RIA Tomsk. Tomsk Polytechnic University (TPU) and Tomsk State University (TSU) significantly improved their
positions in the QS World University Rankings (Quacquarelli Symonds); they have
for the first time entered top 400 best universities of the world, according to
the data on the rankings website.
Earlier it was reported that in the rating of 2015 TPU and TSU entered
the group of 481-490 higher education institutions, also they were in top ten
universities of the Russian Federation.

According to the QS website, TSU rose from group 481-490 to the 377th
position, and TPU took the 400th place of rating. Among the Russian higher
education institutions the State University became the seventh, and Polytechnic
University – the eighth. Thus, in comparison with last year, State University
improved indicators on 104 points, and Tomsk Polytechnic University - on 81
points.
On the first lines of rating higher education institutions of the USA
were located: Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford and Harvard
universities. Moscow State University (the 108th place) became the first in
rating among the Russian universities, further there are – St. Petersburg State
University (the 258th position), Novosibirsk State University (the 291th line).
In total in the general rating 22 Russian higher
education institutions are presented.

The QS World University Rankings 2016/2017 annually is formed by the QS
Quacquarelli Symonds company and it is considered one of the most prestigious.
Assessment of the best universities of the world in the QS rating is made on
the basis of six criteria: academic reputation, reputation among employers,
teachers ratio to number of students, quoting index, share of foreign students,
and also foreign teachers.
TPU and TSU in 2013 entered top-15 the leading Russian universities to
which additional financing is allocated for the program of increase of the
international competitiveness. In 2016 this program involved 21 Russian higher
education institutions. Both Tomsk universities are included into the four of
the strongest participants of the program. By 2020 not less than five
universities of the Russian Federation have to enter one hundred best
universities of the world.
