TOMSK, 21 Sep – RIA Tomsk. A research expedition to the seas of the Eastern Arctic with the participation of scientists of Tomsk Polytechnic University (TPU) started on Friday, September 21, from Arkhangelsk, the press service of the university reported RIA Tomsk.
It is specified that onboard the research vessel Akademik Mstislav Keldysh within 35 days will work the national team of 70 scientists of TPU, Pacific Oceanological Institute of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Stockholm University, Shirshov Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow State University, Institute of Marine Biology, Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences and others.
"TPU became the first Russian university to take part in the organization and implementation of a joint marine Arctic expedition with the Russian Academy of Sciences. For the first time on the shelf of the seas of the Eastern Arctic, the widest and shallowest shelf of the World Ocean, will be carried out investigations using controlled underwater vehicles equipped with manipulators, and also will be executed a setting of seabed seismic stations", – is said in the statement.
Scientists plan to study the processes of ice exhalation (ice smelling of bottom sediments), as well as the features of the formation of gas-discharging paths in the sedimentary strata, the migration of bubble methane from the surface of precipitation to the atmosphere.
"The studying of dangerous natural processes connected with spontaneous massive emissions of bubble methane will allow to determine the level of man-made threats in the construction and operation of various technical facilities – oil and gas platforms, pipelines, port infrastructure and others", – specifies the press service.
It is noted that this is the first interregional marine Arctic expedition uniting the scientific and technical potential of leading institutes and universities of Moscow, the Far East and Siberia.
