Tomsk Polytechnic University (TPU) in the first two waves of the admission campaign 2019 enrolled students from 20 countries; most of the students are from Russia, and Kazakhstan and China are in the lead in foreign countries, the head of the TPU Admission Office Pavel Rvalov is quoted in the message.
Earlier it was reported that more than 11 thousand students are currently studying at TPU. More than three thousand of these - are visitors from 44 countries, including Nigeria, Yemen, Pakistan, Algeria, Azerbaijan, Korea, Tanzania, South Africa and others. It was also reported that Tomsk Polytechnic University plans to build a dormitory for foreign students by 2024.
"Students from 20 countries (will start to study at TPU in 2019): Colombia, Senegal, United Arab Emirates, Maldives, Indonesia, Ghana, Congo, Saudi Arabia, India, Egypt, Iraq, Mongolia, Vietnam, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, China, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan and Russia", - Rvalov said.
The TPU Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs Alexander Vagner said that in total this year the university expects about 450 foreign students at different levels of study: bachelor's degree, master's degree, postgraduate studies. Last year, 415 foreigners were enrolled.
“Most of the students - are from Russia. When speaking about abroad, Kazakhstan comes first, then comes China, and then - African countries”, - Vagner added.

"It is clear that the oil and gas industry remains relevant for us. The rest of the directions - everything related to the formation of digital competencies, with the IT field - the popularity of such areas is growing every year, points there are also growing so that they are already starting to scare", - Vagner said.

He also noted that the top 6 popular areas with the highest passing marks at the university this year included “Software Engineering” (253 points), “Biotechnology” (245 points), “Electronics and Automation of Physical Installations” (242 points) , "Computer Science and Computer Engineering" (242 points), "Oil and Gas Business" (240 points), "Applied Mathematics and Computer Science" (238 points).
Results of the second wave
Vagner said that the second wave of the admission campaign ended a few days ago. According to its results, 1368 freshmen-full-time students were enrolled in Tomsk Polytechnic University for bachelor's and specialist’s programs.
“This year to the state-funded are credited 25 people more compared to the last year. Every year we request for more and more state-funded places, our university is growing and developing dynamically”, - the interlocutor of the agency noted.
He also specified that the average score for the Unified State Exam in TPU in 2019 - is 79.1. Of all the students who entered the state-funded places, 39 are olympiads winners and another 135 - are high-ranking students (they scored more than 255 points in total, not counting points for individual achievements).
"We calculated the average passing score at our university, and compared to last year, it grew by 5 points. If we talk about the minimum passing score, it grew by 30 points".
