TOMSK, Oct 17 – RIA Tomsk. Tomsk Polytechnic University (TPU) is included again in the subject rankings of the British Times
Higher Education (THE) publication in the "Engineering Sciences and
Technologies" direction, taking place in the group 251-300; TPU ranks the
third among the Russian universities included in the rating, the university’s press
service said on Thursday.
The Times Higher Education magazine annually compiles
one of the most influential world university rankings, Times Higher Education
World University Rankings (THE), as well as subject rankings. Earlier it was
reported that in 2018 TPU entered the group 201-250 in the direction of
"Engineering Sciences and Technologies". In the overall ranking of
2019 TPU is included in the group 601-800, and a year earlier it occupied a
place in the group 501-600.
"The published part of the rankings (in the
"Engineering Sciences and Technologies" direction) included 1008
universities. TPU entered the 251-300 group and took the third place among the
country's universities. The Russian leader of the ranking in this area is
Lomonosov Moscow State University. The second place was shared by ITMO
University and Peter the Great St.Petersburg Polytechnic University", – is
said in the report.
The "Engineering Sciences and Technologies"
ranking includes a wide range of narrow subject areas - these are general
engineering, electrical engineering and electronics, aerospace, chemical
engineering and other areas. "TPU become the best Russian non-capital
university in this direction", – the press service notes.

It is added that TPU scientists are currently
conducting extensive engineering research in various fields. Thus, the
university is an active participant in six major collaborations of the European
Center for Nuclear Research (CERN) and participates in the upgrade of the Large
Hadron Collider detectors.
Polytechnics study the physics of extreme states of
matter, in particular the processes of ignition and combustion of fuels. The
university is developing microcapsules for targeted drug delivery and genome
editing, creating physical and chemical technologies for growing living
tissues, biodegradable materials, next-generation drugs using metal
nanoparticles and much more.
Leader Indicators
According to the polytechnic, in the subject and world
ranking THE use 13 indicators combined in five categories. When assessing
teaching, academic reputation in the field of education (reputational survey),
the income of the university, the ratio of the number of teachers to the number
of students, the number of graduates with PhD and graduate bachelors, the
number of awarded doctoral degrees to the number of university employees are
taken into account.
The research reputation of the university, the income
from it and the productivity of research are also considered. Citation and
international interaction are also evaluated: the share of foreign students and
employees, the share of scientific publications co-written with foreign
scientists. The fifth category – is the assessment of income from production
activities (innovations).
"At the same time, the subject rating methodology
has a number of differences in comparison with the world ranking methodology.
Thus, subject ratings give special attention to the features of publication
activity in various subject areas, the number of publications over a certain
period of time and the number of employees working in the corresponding subject
area", – is said in the message.
