TOMSK, Oct 22 – RIA Tomsk. Tomsk State University
(TSU) entered the top 500 of the U.S. News Best Global Universities 2021
rankings, having risen in it by more than 200 lines in three years, the
press service of the university said on Thursday.
Best
Global Universities is a prestigious rankings published by the American
magazine U.S. News & World Report for over 30 years. It's based on
13 indicators including publication activity, citations, research
reputation. Previously published only for American universities, since
2014 it has become a global one. For the calculation, the publication
uses the InCites tool, which allows to evaluate scientific organizations
based on information from the Web of Science database.
As
the representative of the press service of the university explained to
RIA Tomsk, for the first time TSU entered this ranking in 2017, taking
the 701st position. In the next two years, the university rose first to
the 572nd, then to the 509th line.
"TSU has overcome a new
milestone and occupies the 490th place in the ranking. In total, in
three years of entering the ranking, TSU has grown by 211 points, this
is a very serious breakthrough <...>. This year we are again
represented in the subject ranking "Physics", where we occupy the 170th
position (the 6th among the universities of the Russian Federation)", –
TSU Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation Alexander Vorozhtsov is
quoted.

In the subject ranking in the "Materials Science"
direction, TSU has the 295th place in the world (the fourth among
Russian universities), in "Chemistry" – the 401st in the world (the
fourth among Russian universities), in "Engineering Sciences" – the
310th in the world (the third among the universities of the Russian
Federation).
The press service adds that only 19 Russian
universities entered the U.S. News Best Global Universities rankings, 15
of which are participants of the "5-100" project. The three leaders
among Russian universities included Lomonosov Moscow State University
(the 285th position), Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (the
385th position) and National Research Nuclear University MEPhI (the
402nd position).
