The international SecNet network of Tomsk State University (TSU) will
study the climate of Siberia and the Arctic together with the
international organization of northern regions Northern Forum (NF), the
university's press service said on Monday.
Earlier it was
reported that the international consortium SecNet TSU unites scientific
centers and scientists specializing in the study of Siberia and the
Arctic and is working extensively in this direction. Scientists from the
TSU SecNet research network, together with experts from the
international project INTERACT, are creating a network of indigenous
"citizen researchers" in the Arctic to monitor the climate.
"The
Northern Forum (NF) and SecNet, the international network of Tomsk
State University dedicated to research in Siberia and the Arctic, have
signed a memorandum of understanding and agreed to implement joint
research and educational projects. A major international non-profit
association and one of Russia's leading universities will focus on
solving climate problems", – the statement said.

According
to the press service, the Northern Forum (NF) includes northern regions
of Russia – Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug (YaNAO), Khanty-Mansi
Autonomous Okrug–Yugra (KhMAO), Nenets Autonomous District, Chukotka,
Magadan region, northern territories of Alaska (USA), Lapland (Finland),
Akureyri (Iceland).
"The signing of the memorandum of
understanding opens up new opportunities for interaction between the two
parties. In particular, SecNet and the Northern Forum have agreed to
jointly prepare and conduct the Arctic Voice International Arctic Year
in 2023, focusing on key issues for indigenous peoples in the
circumpolar region. Addressing the social and economic problems of this
group is one of the priorities of the Northern Forum", – the press service
said.
According to the university, joint research is also
planned on changes in the diet of indigenous peoples of the North, the
impact of change on health, the transformation of the environment and
social phenomena due to climate.
