TOMSK, July 9 – RIA Tomsk. The German oncologist Harald zur
Hausen who got the Nobel Prize for researches of the human papillomavirus became
the honorary doctor of Tomsk State University (TSU), the correspondent of RIA
Tomsk reports from the awards ceremony.
The
international congress "Cellular and molecular mechanisms of
interconnection of a tumor and a microenvironment" began its work on
Thursday in TSU. Its organizers are Tomsk Cancer Research Institute of RAMS,
the Heidelberg University, TSU and the technological platform "Future of
Medicine". Scientists from Russia, Europe and the USA will present the
advanced researches and effective methods of diagnostics and therapy of oncological
diseases. Professor Hausen opened the congress.

Zur Hausen
declared that it is honor to receive such honorary title, and noted that he has
never been a physician in classical sense. He "treated" "all people at once" by his researches.
According
to the university's data, the rank of the honorary doctor of TSU is given to
"great educators, scientists, cultural figures". Crown Prince
Nicholas (who became the emperor Nicholas II) became the first among them in
1891. Outstanding Russian chemist Dmitry Mendeleyev, the physiologist and the
academician Ivan Pavlov, the Nobel laureate Zhores Alferov, the poet Yevgeny
Yevtushenko are among the honorary doctor.
Harald Zur
Hausen is a German physician and a scientist. He is an owner of numerous
national and international awards, among which are Robert Koch’s medals, the
award of Charles Mott Foundation. He is awarded seven honorable academic
degrees, elected the honorary member of several academies, in particular, of
the Academia Europaea and the Institute of medicine of National Academy of Sciences
of the USA. He is also an editor-in-chief of "The international magazine
of cancer".
