light-gas ballistic installation using compressed gas instead of gunpowder;
leading researcher of institute Yury Khristenko reported, installation to be
used for simulation of meteoroid influence on spacecrafts.
"The easily gas ballistic installations, which
are used today in Russia for simulation of impact of meteoroid and space debris
on spacecrafts (there are five-six of them in Russia), use gunpowder. But
recently scientists have big problems with its use: experimental installations,
rooms, service staff should be certified", – Khristenko told.
Separate problem, according to him, is storage of
gunpowder and explosive materials: "Therefore we also thought of use of a
compressed gas. Organizations of Roskosmos are primarily interested in
development of such installations".

According to him, scientists of the Scientific
Research Institute AMM developed projects of two-level and three-stage
ballistic installations for leading research institute of Roskosmos –
TSNIIMash. They will allow to imitate influence of different elements
fragmentary meteoroid environment on spacecrafts in land conditions to develop
more effective remedies of protection of satellites and the ISS.
"Also other organizations, where researches of
reliability of different constructions and new materials at high-speed blow are
conducted, for example, when testing aircraft equipment, got interested in the
development. Space speeds are not necessary for such researches – so-called
artillery, up to 2.5 kilometers per second is enough", – Khristenko told.
He also reported that negotiations with a potential
customer from among civil structures are now conducted.
