competition in straw figures making dated for celebration of Yanov Day in
Pervomaisky district; then these figures will become decoration of platform
near the village Berezovka where traditionally holiday takes place, head of department
of cultural development, sport, youth policy and tourism Natalya Mikhaylova
told RIA Tomsk.
Yanov Day is a holiday of the Baltic people dated for the day of summer
solstice. It is noted in the night of June 24 (old style – July 7), symbolizes
the termination of a spring sowing campaign, during it god of fertility Jānis
is honored. Earlier it was reported that the holiday annually takes place near
the village of Berуzovka in Pervomaisky district in the Tomsk region.
"We will have a competition in creation of straw figures for the
first time. Five teams – three of the Tomsk region, one of Perm and one
national team, in it will be the Estonian, the Muscovite and the resident of
Tomsk. Figures will be about four meters in height... There will be a horse on
the hind legs and a bear. But this is still as stated by the
participants", – Mikhaylova told.
She specified that the teams will begin to make straw figures three days
before the holiday, then anyone will be able to admire them.
Yanov Day will pass on June 23 on the traditional platform – at Yanov
farm near the village Berezovka. In the afternoon competitions of mowers and a
competition in production of flower wreaths will be held. The four-meter fire
and dances around it will finish the festival.
