It was previously reported that two Tomsk universities - Tomsk State (TSU) and Polytechnic (TPU) universities - since 2013 have been participating in the "5-100" program of increasing the world competitiveness, which aims to ensure that by 2020 at least five Russian universities will enter the top 100 best universities of the world. Within the framework of the project, 21 universities annually receive additional funding from the state budget. In 2019, TSU entered the first group of universities and received 861 million rubles under the program.

"The TSU team presented a map of the main achievements of the university at the XII meeting of the council on improving the competitiveness <...> of the 5-100 project... The results of the defense will be known later", - is said in the statement.

It is noted that the TSU roadmap includes presentations of four parameters: the TSU target model, university policies (educational, research, innovation and gap analysis), infrastructure and the socioeconomic role of the university.

"The team’s statement to the council included not only the presentation of TSU results for 2018, but also the presentation of the university’s plans in the context of creating a research and educational center in the region and consolidating the region’s potential within the framework of the Big university", - the press service of TSU quotes the rector Eduard Galazhinsky.

According to the rector, the council was very interested in the next step of the project, how the university presents its ambitions in five and 10 years in a global context. "The idea of the Big university aroused great interest, and the governor Sergey Zhvachkin was asked a lot of questions on this subject. The discussion was raised by the question of maintaining autonomy with increased coordination and synergy of resources - and this idea received the support of the council members", - Galazhinsky noted after the presentation.

At the meeting of the council, representatives of the academic community, officials and international experts will discuss key aspects of increasing the global competitiveness of Russian universities in 2020-2024. Following the meeting, recommendations for providing state support to universities in 2020 will be prepared for the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation, the report notes.
