TOMSK, May 11 –
RIA Tomsk. The solemn meeting of the
Scientific Council of Tomsk Polytechnic (TPU) took place at the International
Cultural Center (TPU ICC) on the occasion of the TPU 125th anniversary; during
the meeting some scientists were presented with state awards, and the TPU team
as a whole got the gratitude of the Russian President, RIA Tomsk reports from
the scene.
Earlier it was
reported that in 2021, TPU celebrates 125 years since its foundation.
Throughout the year the university will hold holiday events, including All-Russian
Student Entrepreneurship Forum, international scientific conferences,
competitions and a large sports festival. The main anniversary events were
scheduled for May 11.
"This
anniversary for each polytechnic is in the heart. For me, today is a great
honor to represent the TPU team. On behalf of all the employees, students and
professors, I thank all those who share this celebration with us... Today, TPU
meets its 125th anniversary in the status of one of the strongest universities
of our country... Happy holiday, dear polytechnics," TPU Acting Rector
Andrey Yakovlev said at the meeting.
After the
opening speech by the Acting Rector, the ceremony of rewarding the university
scientific staff with the regional, government and presidential awards began.
In particular,
the medals of the Order "For Merit to the Fatherland" of the II class
were awarded to leading researcher of the TPU Research School of High-Energy
Physics Sergei Gyngazov and director of the TPU School of Non-Destructive
Testing & Security Vladimir Zykov. The gratitude of the President of the
Russian Federation for merits was also given to the university's staff as a
whole and separately to Vladimir Spitsyn, professor of the TPU Engineering
School of Computer Science & Robotics.
"TPU - the
only university in the Tomsk region - was ranked the 23rd in the QS World
University Rankings by Petroleum Engineering subject, and the first in the
Russian Federation. Such facts cannot be taken away from us. You are a
flagship, you are worthy of celebrating 125 years of organization, development
and formation. I sincerely congratulate you, wish you good luck and new
discoveries," the deputy governor Lyudmila Ogorodova congratulated the
polytechnics.
TPU was founded
by the Ministry of Education of the Russian Empire as Tomsk Technological
Institute of Emperor Nicholas II on April 29 (May 11, New Style), 1896. It was
the first engineering institute in the Asian part of Russia. Dmitri Ivanovich
Mendeleev was actively involved in the creation of the Institute and especially
its Chemical Department. Classes at the Institute began in the fall of 1900.
