TOMSK, Nov 22 – RIA Tomsk, Karina Sapunova.
Scientists from 12 universities and scientific centers of Russia, the USA and
Europe will discuss the processes, happening in the Arctic, and their influence
on climate of the whole world at the forum at the Tomsk Polytechnical University (TPU), is reported on the website of the higher education
institution.
Earlier it was reported that scientists of TPU
participate in the international researches of the processes, happening in the
shelf of the polar seas of Eastern Siberia, where there are more than 90% of
underwater permafrost and a large amount of hydrocarbons. They found out that
underwater permafrost is unstable and there are methane emissions, which
accelerate global warming and can lead to disaster.
"The international forum starts in TPU,
devoted to studying of biogeochemical consequences of degradation of permafrost
in the Arctic Ocean, with special attention to the East Siberian shelf – the
widest and most shallow in the World Ocean. Scientists from 12 universities and
institutes of Russia, Sweden, the Netherlands, Great Britain, the USA and Italy
will take part in the Arctic forum", – it is said in the message.

It is noted that scientists will provide the
researches, devoted to the Arctic including unpublished data, at the forum.
Also planning of joint surveys within the international long-term scientific
programs for studying of Siberia in general and specifically on the East
Siberian shelf will become one of the main tasks.
According to the higher education institution,
the vice-president of RAS, the chairman of the Far East office of RAS Valentin
Sergienko; full member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and Nobel
Committee, professor of the Stockholm University Orjan Gustafsson; professor of
the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences, The University of Manchester
(England) Bart van Dongen and others will become key speakers of the forum.
It is added that following the results of the
forum it is planned to adopt the resolution on need to create the International
Arctic Siberian Scientific Center (IASSC) based on TPU. It will allow to
increase efficiency of complex researches in the Arctic that not only to study
its influence on climate, but also to predict natural dangers during the works
on the shelf.
